Zoe Bell: Quentin Tarantino And Death Proof

ON QUENTIN TARANTINO: I first met him because I was traveling to Canada for a holiday to check it out because I didn’t think I could work in America. I didn’t have a headshot. I didn’t have a resume. I didn’t have sh*t because in New Zealand, there’s like four stunt women. If you want the tall one that can flip and fight, you call me.  If you want the short one – do you know what I mean? While I was in San Francisco, Quentin’s assistant talked to a friend of hers who was a friend of mine who like,” There’s auditions on. You should go.” I was like, “Sure. Then I can go home and say I auditioned for a Tarantino movie.” I had actually no intention of getting the part.

The first time I met Quentin was at the audition. I walked in and there was a guy that looked really familiar on the bike, and I sort of smiled at him and he smiled back.  I was like, “How do I know someone here?” I kept walking. I was like, “Oh, my God. That was Ethan Hawke. Where the fuck am I right now?  I’m in a time warp. What’s going on?” I walk in and there’s Daryl Hannah pumping iron. I’m like, “Oh, my God. That’s Splash. Where am I?” I did my audition and I saw Quentin there and a bunch of Chinese guys. Everyone was floating around. It was all just a bit surreal really. At the very end, Quentin came up to me and said  “I’m Quentin. Nice to meet you”. I was just like, “Hi. You look really familiar. I know you.” And the rest is history. It’s amazing.

ON DEATH PROOF: When we first started shooting, I was sweating my tits off on the front of that car, and my stomach was getting burnt because the engine would get so hot. By the end of it, it was so butt cold that every time they said, “Cut,” Rosario had to pass me on a jacket and I was like, “Da, da, da, da,” on the front of the car. That was what got me hooked on acting because I got to do both sides of the character. We didn’t have to shoot around my face. Whatever shot looked the coolest, that’s what we did and it was just exciting and satisfying. And I was so spoiled working with Quentin and all those girls. So spoiled.
