Vanessa Lengies: Leadership Camp

There was a thing at my school called Leadership Camp. It was a camp to help teach kids how to lead, how to get people involved and pumped up about stuff. Somebody asked me if I wanted to go the first year of high school. I didn’t know what it was; I had never been to summer camp, so I was really excited to be invited.

So I’m in seventh grade and I was watching the eleventh graders talk about how you can choose to lead this positive life and you can inspire people, and help people, and live life to the fullest and dream as big as you want to dream.  I just remember bursting into tears and feeling like, “Oh, my God.  Other people think this too,” and I can actually talk about it, and be that way, and live life to the fullest and express myself.

I feel like going to high school, it’s so scary because you think you have to conform and be like what everybody else is or else you get made fun of. I remember that moment of me crying and feeling so happy and just excited that I could be happy, and positive and not have to try to be other people.
