Vanessa Lengies: Finger Puppet Collector
It started in New York. I was there on vacation, and there was a booth and a man selling things that he had made and sewn. There was this elephant finger puppet with these big ears. I don’t know, I was in one of those moods. I didn’t think anything of it, then I started to put my thumbs in the ears of the elephant. Then I had it in my car, and I realized I could take it everywhere I went. There was something so magical about the feeling of putting my thumbs in the elephant’s ears and I just fell in love with this finger puppet.
Then I saw another one and I was like, “Oh, a finger puppet,” and I got it. Then they were best friends. In my mind, they were best friends. The next thing you know, any time I would see a finger puppet, I would buy it and now I have a collection of like 73 finger puppets. They’re all amazing and they’re all different. They all tell a different story.
I got one in Ireland when I was about to go to this boat to go to this rock called Skellig Michael. It’s this 700-foot rock formation in the middle of the Atlantic and the monks used to walk up and build these little huts. It was ridiculous. That finger puppet has that memory. I went to the Renaissance Fair in Los Angeles the other week and they had finger puppets there. I bought this little hedgehog.
I have this crazy finger puppet collection, and they make me so happy. I think if you see them, they’ll make you happy too.
