Devin Kelley: You Don’t Say…

Devin has been a strict vegetarian for the last 10 years and has always been a super picky eater. “Being in Chicago the land of hot dogs was a bit challenging,” she laughs. “Hanging out with all the Chicago cops, I was like a foreign specimen to them.”

When Devin was two years old her family moved from St. Paul, Minnesota to Brussels, Belgium and that’s where her acting career began. At the ripe age of four Devin played the Virgin Mary in the Nativity Play.

Thanks in part to her family Devin’s success hasn’t gone to her head. “They’re the first people to bust my balls about it, but they’re not jealous or undercutting, they’re so supportive,” she explains. “Of course throughout Chicago code I’d get texts from them saying ‘nice polyester pants you’re sporting today’.

Devin Kelley: YOGA! YOGA! YOGA!

“Yoga is a huge part of my life,” Devin admits. Her first taste of yoga came during her freshman year at USC. “It was a little weird and my parents were probably pissed they were paying a lot of money for that, but it changed my life, it’s my thing to keep me grounded and normal and happy.”

When she was on hiatus from The Chicago Code she got her teacher’s certificate for yoga and now volunteers with the organization Hollywood Arts. “It’s for kids who are kicked out of the foster care system, they’re booted out of the system at 18, so a lot of them are homeless or trying to get back on their feet,” she explains. “The school offers classes like photography and improv and I just started teaching yoga there this past summer,” Devin passionately tells me. “We started a yoga program and it’s awesome and I’ve learned so much by trying to teach it to others especially ones who have never been exposed to it. It’s really fun to watch them get into it.”

Devin Kelley: Drinking The Kool-Aid

Every summer artists of all types descend upon the campus of Williams College for the Williamstown Theater Festival, and after graduating from the USC theater program, Devin Kelley was one of them. “I got through the post-graduation summer and that was hard and weird, all of a sudden I’m a real person, it was bizarre, no one is telling me what to do, you want it your entire life and then when you finally get it…”

“Williamstown was the game changer,” Devin says matter of fact. It was there that she first met her Manager, who later set her up with an Agent, who four months later sent her out on the audition for The Chicago Code. “Williamstown was the snowball that started it all.”

“There’s such a magic to it,” Devin explains. “They call it the Williamstown spirit. I remember the first meeting when they said that, I was like ‘that’s the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever heard, I don’t want to have anything to do with this Williamstown spirit, that is weird,’ and then half way through the summer I was drinking the kool aid. I was all about it,” she laughs.“Everyone from the apprentices, to the fancy old Broadway actors that have been there for forty years are all about it. You’re doing what you love. It’s the best learning experience. You’re working your creative muscles every day, creative overload.”

Devin Kelley: Playing Cops And Robbers

“It’s kind of bananas!” Devin admits, about booking her series regular role on The Chicago Code during her first pilot season last year. “I never did a pilot season before. I didn’t know which way was up. I didn’t know what to expect, and all of a sudden I’m going out three times a day, I’m changing in my car. Looking back there’s probably more pressure than I was aware of.”

“The script (called Ride Along at the time) came into my hands and it was killer, it just stood apart,” she recalls. “You read so much crap, things that don’t go anywhere and this was a beacon of light. I thought it was a little weird I’d be playing a cop. Just not something I thought of. What twenty something girl do we see on TV wielding a gun and making it look real and gritty? That just doesn’t happen.”

She did a “chemistry test” for the role of Vonda Wysocki opposite her future co-star Todd Williams. “It was the quintessential ‘Hi, I just met you and now we’re gonna kiss and pretend we’re in love.’ We skipped nine steps; it’s every cliché I’d ever heard.” After the test Shawn pulled her aside and told her if she got this it was going to change everything. He warned her “You need to keep your head on straight because I don’t want to deal with you going all crazy Hollywood on me!” she recalls.

Devin’s Cinderella story wouldn’t be complete without her getting the phone call that she booked the show while at her waitressing job. “I was wearing a black dress and didn’t have pockets so I had my phone in my boots. My phone started vibrating, I remember I was setting a Coors Light down on a table and I started reaching in my boot like a maniac and ran outside and it was my agent and Jill (her manager) and I just lost my mind.”

Molly Tarlov: You Don’t Say…

Molly auditioned for the role of Janis Ian in Mean Girls when she was 16. “I could have never done that better than Lizzy Caplan. That was the one time I haven’t gotten a part that I was like okay. I sucked and you’re awesome.”

One of Molly’s favorite plays is August Osage County. She prefers plays to musicals and will not be getting on stage to sing anytime time soon, unless it’s to lip synch, in which case she would totally rock.

Molly was on a basketball team called The Baby Panthers for the Chelsea Piers League. And they were not very good. She just bought a basketball at Target and is currently looking for some people shoot hoops with.

Molly Tarlov: Vin-Sketches

What’s next for Molly? Well, I’m glad you asked. This November she’ll be shooting an independent film. “It’s called “Everlasting” and the role is very different from Sadie. I actually get to wear eyeliner which I’m very excited about.” Sadie may be the head cheerleader, but she’s not exactly glam. “I’m like please one more coat of mascara, please. Come on guys, you already made me the big bully, at least let me have a little bit of a smoky eye” she laughs.

She’s also working on a project with one of her friends. “We are writing and shooting… vignettes, I call them, the friend I’m writing with calls them sketches and I will not call them that. So I guess it’s somewhere between the pretentiousness of calling it a vignette and the kookiness of calling it a sketch and it’s about being a girl in LA, or just a girl.”
