Lauren Gilmore: 5 Ways To Fend Off Unwanted Male Advances

Let me preface this by saying I wish just saying “thanks, but no thanks” would work in dealing with unwanted advances, but it doesn’t. That approach usually ends with the guy turning angry. Im talking full out attack mode- insults, threats, etc. Maybe I hang out in unruly bars, but in any case, I usually go about it differently. Here are my top five techniques:

Talk about my love of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Why? I say the way they use intergalactic species to challenge societal norms, of course…and who doesn’t believe in aliens?
Mention I’m obsessed with cats. I have lots of cat pics on my phone just to prove the point.
Order tequila on the rocks. Somehow I believe it sends the signal that Im not into bullsh*t.
One time I pretended to have a slight hearing problem. I “leaned” on some 3^rd grade extra curricular learning, aka sign language. It worked like a charm.
And if all else fails… I just kinda be myself. I mean I’m a lot like tequila – straight up, strong, makes you act a little loopy, but not everyone’s drink of choice.

Lauren Gilmore: Marty Gilmore On His Daughter (Part Two)

G2W Editor: Yesterday we printed Part One of our exclusive interview with Marty Gilmore, father of Lauren. Today we proudly present Part Two of that conversation. Fathers of aspiring actresses everywhere should read this carefully!

G2W: Tell me when about Lauren first told you she was going to go into the entertainment business, what was your reaction?

MARTY: I’m the practical person. I first told her the story of the fifteen minutes of fame and don’t think it’ll be more than that even if you do well. I really tried to set her expectations. If you can do this hosting or any of these various things and it teaches you to have a voice and you get into public policy, maybe that’s a good thing. We really looked at it as a means to an end, not to say I’m going there to be in Hollywood and be popular and call all my high school friends and say I’m more popular than you are now, because frankly that’s why 99.9% people go to Hollywood.

G2W: How often do you talk to her?

MARTY: Oh, goodness, every day; almost every other day. We’re pretty close. A lot of people ask me what’s the secret of Lauren’s success? Lauren listens. It’s unusual for people to listen to advice and Lauren really does do that. She’ll listen to experience and then take that advice.

G2W: Are you afraid of all the guys hitting on her?

MARTY: I took her to her first bar when she was 14 and got her a martini. She was in Chicago by herself at 17 or 18 and going to college and doing her own thing. I don’t fear that. Here’s what I do fear: I call it “pushing the envelope.” If you grow and you get this sort of fame , how do you come down from that high? You know you’ve pushed the envelope, how do you come back and have a normal life in Podunk, USA? That’s my biggest fear, how’s she going to handle that?

G2W: Any advice to fathers with daughters out here?

MARTY: Talk to them all the time. Support them and the idea of setting their expectations. So that when they go to that audition, let them know that it’s a hundred auditions and they’re going to be told they’re all the things you know their going to be told. The negatives. That doesn’t define them. They define themselves. That would be the best advice for anybody who tries this.

Lauren Gilmore: Marty Gilmore On His Daughter (Part One)

G2W EDITOR: Being a parent is hard. Being a parent to a Girl2Watch is even harder. In order to gain some insights into what it’s like to have a daughter trying to make it in Hollywood, we spoke with Marty Gilmore, father of Lauren. In this exclusive two-part Girl2Watch interview, Marty gave us his views on raising children, high school, Hollywood, and our dysfunctional dependence on oil.

G2W: Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

MARTY GILMORE: I do two things. I have a small hedge fund, which is not the evil hedge funds you hear about, just an investment fund and financial product. More importantly, I’m the executive director of a nonprofit called The Coalition for Independent America, which goal is to educate people on the core issues surrounding our oil dependency. We’re non-partisan. It’s an extremely difficult issue in this environment so our goal is to educate that public.

G2W: What was Lauren like growing up?

MARTY: Lauren’s always been tall. She was off the charts as a child. She was precocious in athletics and she was a really tough soccer player. You have a picture where this mud draped all over her and fighting her way through it like six years old a mud pile , fighting the kids for the ball. My core image of her would be that. She’s very tenacious and always has been way ahead of her time. She’s always been extremely outgoing. She’s always been a good student. Those are like the three terms I would use.

G2W: Tells about how she left school early.

MARTY: Well first of all I orchestrated it. Lauren ended up going only a year and a half. My other daughter did the same thing. I hate high school for upper middle class, white, high school suburban high schools surrounding major metropolitan areas – that’s sort of a stereotypical “mean girl” high school. We have the two daughters in this whole community of Chicago-land that have taken a little advantage of a trick I found. The loophole is that in our state, a junior college has to accept a person who is “disenfranchised” from the high school, and so normally what would happen is somebody would get expelled, and so the kids kind of travel off to a junior college when they’re 18 or 19 and don’t have a GED or something, some of that hard luck story, but I turned it into a positive.

G2W: How did you manage that?

MARTY: My theory has been why are the kids going to this junior and senior year in this era, where the kids are so mature and there’s so much social pressure? Why not just go to a junior college take the exact same courses they would be taking whether it be high school or a major college? Lauren left halfway in the school year. She tested at all college level courses and we started her the next day in a junior college. So she was going to junior college while all her friends were going to high school and the whole social brouhaha that was going around, she sort of bypassed. The way we played at than was first of all, all her friends hated her because they were saying, “How did you get out of high school?” “How come you don’t get to come to high school?” I leveraged that and used it as a sort of a pride issue to her. That she was saying, “I’m in college now and I’m only sixteen.” So from the self confidence level, where normally high school crushes her confidence, now you have a girl who’s saying “Well look now I’m going to college and you’re not.”

G2W: How did other parents react?

MARTY: The parents I talk to don’t think of me negatively. They say, “That’s a really good idea. I wish I’d done it with my kid instead of spending $80,000 to take English 101.” Everybody tells me to write a book on this.

G2W: You don’t really care what people think about you, do you?

MARTY: No, no, we’re not going to worry about that too much.

Lauren Gilmore: Beef Jerky Junkie

It all started four months ago. I was obsessed with granola bars but I figured out they were all carbs and fat, so then some nutritionist was like “why don’t you try something that’s more a protein?” I was at a gas station and I saw like 80,000 carbs or no carbs and all protein, so that made me want to try the jerky. It was like sticking my toe in a way cold pool.

Jack’s Links Original – that’s my brand. I was craving it and I went to four gas stations that didn’t have it, so I bought different brands, but all the other one’s taste funny. I went to the fifth gas station and they finally had it, but my credit card wouldn’t work. I’d had my credit card shut off because I went to five different gas stations to get different kinds of jerky!

I had to call the guy at the bank and I’ve actually never heard a Wells Fargo Operator laugh. I was like “I have an affinity for beef jerky so that’s why I’ve been to seven different places”. He’s like “No way. Seriously?”, so they turned it back on.

But it was a problem or it was a problem or it is a problem.

Lauren Gilmore: Sandpaper Saleswoman

The day after college graduation I jumped on a plane with two suitcases and moved to Los Angeles; not in pursuit of the Hollywood dream, but to increase the sales of 3M sandpaper, handmaskers and adhesives. I was a traveling sales women, which comes with alotta perks( car, cell phone, corporate credit card and gas card. However we all know the saying, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch”-and there is no such thing as a small territory in California; I had customers from West Covina to Fresno( you know the place where K-Fed comes from) So, I spent the next year of my life in my Pontiac driving from construction site to construction site: throwing on hard hats, jumping on ladders, inspecting molding and solving paint-adhesion issues…let’s not get me started. I’ll admit I cried from time to time and “Lauren phoned home”. I remember circling around a target parking lot explaining to my dad that I just couldn’t find the passion for tape within myself…the family likes to joke about this often. But what the job did provide was a stage or rather a ladder for me to find my voice…and presenting, talking , connecting to others is really my passion-

Needless to say I stopped slinging tape about a year in and started to explore alternative career paths. I started to train to become a yoga instructor, but was also working at news station in Santa Barbara. And I loved this segment they do called Friday Football Focus. It was fun, exciting and all about story telling… that’s moment I fell for the Hollywood dream…to be able to tell a story be it a character or myself I wanted to connect with people( or something of that context), hence the Hollywood dream was dreamt… and the rest, well a lot of classes in both acting and hosting, hard work and lots of moments of humility.

Lauren Gilmore: Minute To Win It

It’s awesome, it’s awesome. There’s like 60 different games and this computer chooses a game for contestants and then they have a minute to complete it. One of the games is Oreo cookie where they have to move the Oreo from their forehead to their mouth. And every time they win the money gets higher. So it goes from $1,000 to $5000 to $10,000 to $50,000 all the way to a million. It’s so exciting and so goofy at the same time, it’s like the most enjoyable thing to watch. The contestants are great and they’re lovable – there’s a part where I actually cried. It’s kind of like the all round feel good show.

My job is to make the game fun. So when there’s smoke that comes up and then there’s a ping pong ball, they’re like, “Lauren, come up with a pose.” So I’ll like do the heel stretcher or I’ll do a back bend. I put the contestant in position, set them up for the game. I enforce how serious this is and then I do a little strut out. And sometimes I fall and sometimes I don’t. That’s about it.
