I have to look good to be on stage. Right now I’m working with a boxing trainer. I used to box when I was in San Antonio, Texas. It’s like the best workout you can do. Right now I’m on a mission. He has these clips that go on your legs and you’re hanging upside down.It’s an ab workout and I’ve never had to do that. This is like even worse. It’s a mission for me that I have to get at least 25 reps without him having to help me. I’m a Manny Pacquiao fan, and a very big ufc fan as well.

I would have to say Mexican men from Mexico are more hardcore in their ways, their roots, their traditions. They’re more like, “No, the woman is supposed to be home washing dishes, cooking this and that.” Whatever. And Mexican-American men, I think are more Americanized, more like, “Okay, yeah, you can have a job too. You can work. You can drop the kids off in daycare.” And the Mexican would be like, “No, you’re the one who’s doing all that.” So the American you can have more help and it’s okay. I mean, that’s the difference. It’s just a little bit more open to having a little bit more freedom.

Music in general, especially in Spanish, is mostly dominated by the male, especially because it’s easier for companies deal with men. They don’t have to worry about wardrobe and makeup and hair. Guys, they can pretty much take care of themselves. As far as like musically, guys are more inclined to want to learn how to play instruments and learn all the instruments and make bands. I mean, women do too, but you rarely see a female band or females musicians. There are some. It’s just more male dominant than women. We’re changing it slowly.

Jazmin Lopez: Your Guide To The Sounds (and Hats) of Mexico

There are many styles of music coming out of Mexico right now, each with their own style of hat. Luckily we had Jazmin explain it all to us.

Banda – has all the brass, your string instruments, your wind instruments – like you were playing with a full band. It includes everything and it’s a little bit more. La Banda el Recodo – that would be one of the most popular bands in the genre.

Norteno - you have your drums, your drum set, your accordion, the guitar, but no piano. A bajo sexto (sp) which is a 12 string guitar but it has like a different sound, more like a let’s see…it just sounds a little bit more deep sound, the 12 string. And it also uses an alto saxophone. The tempo is very upbeat. It’s very rhythmic. That would be a band like Primavera.

Duranguese – would be Jazmin Lopez! It’s only drums, bass drum, piano and saxophones. Most Durangueses have like two or three keyboard players, no bass guitar because the bass is played on the keyboard, and the harmony is played on the keyboard as well. No guitar, no accordion. Some people have called it circus music because it’s very, very fast tempo, but it doesn’t have the typical instruments of other bands.

Mariachi - is of course trumpets. You have your string instruments, your violins, some people have the harp, the violins, your guitars, and the trumpets. Some people have trombones. And the little chelas. It’s all acoustic instruments and that’s pretty much what it is.

The typical hat is your cowboy hat. That is universal and it will go with anything, but it depends – depending on the genre how you shape your hat. For the regular Norteno it’s a little crested, but the Duranguese, that’s like freaking wearing like a taco hat. Banda – they don’t use hats.

Jazmin Lopez: The Next J. Lo?

I’m a singer first, host second. Right now we just wrapped up the second season, so I’m pretty much free to focus 100 percent on my singing career. But they never conflicted with each other – they’ve always been hand in hand. We do the filming during the week and gigging on the weekends. If I ever have to do both, they work it into where I do all my filming during the day and I’m free to do my singing or anything I’ve got to do in the evenings. So it’s worked out pretty well.

Our Christmas album just got recorded. We’re actually going to take pictures for that soon. I don’t know if it’s 11 or 12 songs, that one is very versatile. We did some of the songs and the lyrics in English and just put a Duranguese beat on it. On one of them we have a bonus track which we left it in pop, which is Feliz Navidad, we left that in the original version and we just gave it like a pop version. So it’s very, it’s the traditional Christmas Spanish songs that pretty much everybody does. We just gave it a little twist to it. And that should be out hopefully next month.

Jazmin Lopez: Just A Small Town Girl…

Bracketville, Texas is a very small town. Since my parents have businesses there, everybody knew us. The whole town knew we were the Lopez kids, and that my parents were Ignacio and Juanita. Anything we did, if we ever dared to do anything, we knew that somehow somebody was going to find out because everybody knew us. So we really couldn’t do much. My parents were very strict. We really didn’t go out to like parties or house parties or anything like that. We could never go to sleep-overs, nothing like that, and it was usually just to practice whatever sport we were in and then back home, our chores at the business, which was washing dishes or sweeping the floors and all that stuff, and back to school.

Eventually I told my mom,“You know I need to start getting my own band because I’m not exposing myself like I should be.” We knew one musician and from there we went on looking for anybody else that he knew. So we were able to put the band together through him. We started gigging in Del Rio, the border town in Mexico, which was like 30 minutes away from where I lived. So that’s how I eventually started to get my own band. We were together for like seven, eight years.

At that time when we were living there, Mexico wasn’t that bad. Every weekend was, “Oh, let’s go to Mexico and party.” It was cool because everybody knew me in Mexico. Anywhere I went I would get to go in free and get VIP treatment. I t was cool being in a border town. It just gives you the freedom of going over there to have fun, have a good time with friends or whatever and not have a curfew. Not unless you had a curfew from your parents, but in Mexico you don’t have a curfew.

Jazmin Lopez: Remexa on MTV Tr3s

MTV Tr3s an extension of regular MTV, that is more focused on the Latino and Hispanic population. It focuses on pop music, regional Mexican music, everything that has to do with Spanish whether it’s pop, Latin, Dominican, Puerto Rican, whatever. It lets people know what’s going on in their own community and in their own culture.

ReMexa is a first on MTV Tr3s. It’s the first time ever that they have a show that focuses on regional Mexican music. We interview bands, we gossip on what’s going on with the bands. We show people what they do on a day of a concert, how they get ready, what they do to prepare before they go on stage. That’s pretty much what it is. It’s a regional Mexican show and it’s the first time that it’s been done, so it’s very important that we get the right message across.

Introducing Jazmin Lopez From Remexa

“El sol sale para todos” (the sun rises for everybody), says Jazmin Lopez. And it most certainly has for this young latina. Raised in a small border town in Texas, Jazmin has always lived between two cultures, and now serves as a bridge between them. A double threat as a singer and as the host of MTV Tr3s’ Remexa, she moves from English to Spanish and back with such ease that speakers of either language know exactly what she’s saying. Her show Remexa champions regional Mexican music of which there are numerous genres, and Jazmin serves as a welcoming guide. With her second season just wrapped and a new album coming out next month, this hard-working Girl2Watch is living proof that “Quien madruga, Dios le ayuda” (God helps the early riser.)
