Gabrielle Dennis: Wacky Rumors

What’s funny is when you’re on TV everybody assumes one, that you are really rich. Even if it was a toothpaste commercial, it’s like,“Oh, my gosh! She’s making money. She’s out there living the life.” And I’m like, “Really? Because I just filed unemployment last month.” It’s just when you first start out, it’s not what it all seems and people kind of assume that you’re living this lavish life, and that you have a certain kind of attitude or personality. When people get to know me, it’s not even like that. I don’t know. For whatever reason, I kind of have this face and when I don’t smile, I look upset. I get that from my mom, I can’t help it. I can’t walk around smiling all day.

They assume apparently that I’ve slept with more people than I’ve actually slept with in my life. I actually had a friend get into an argument with someone that didn’t know me that claimed,“I know her. We’ve been together.” And I’m like, “Dude, I don’t even know who you are.”

And then sometimes, people with this whole MySpace and Facebook thing! I think that’s really cool. But I’ll get people that think that I’m someone else. I had a girl just recently was like, “Hey girl, I always told you you would make it. Shouts out! This is such and such from…” She was somewhere like Orange County and I’m like,“I’m sorry. It’s the wrong Gabrielle. I’m not even this person.”

Gabrielle Dennis: Love Advice For The Single Ladies

I make a guy wait a long time, and it got progressively longer by each boyfriend. First boyfriend, six months. Second one, eight. The next one, a year. The next one, a year and a half. But to me, that wasn’t crazy. I think it was just the things that they would do because I made them wait was pretty hilarious. That’s why I always tell girls,“Don’t give it up! Make him work for it! Please!” Guys will do anything. I’ve been on trips. What’s hilarious is there’s guys out there, they’ll give you the money if you allow them to, but I won’t take it.

A single woman – if you’re in it… if you’re into being intimate with a guy because it’s what you want to do, then for sure – go for it. But I’m very old school. Wait. Be patient. Because I feel like anything that’s worth the wait, it’ll happen for sure.

Don’t second guess yourself or put their needs before yours ever, because what’s weird, there’s this story Lysistata, where all the women stop having sex with their husbands to stop the war. But we don’t get that. We really hold the key to the power if we just use our minds and put ourselves to it, because it is what it is.

Gabrielle Dennis: Hustla

When I moved to LA, I didn’t have representation. I had been an actor before being here, but it was mostly theatre. When I went to performing arts high school, I just showed up to the auditions. I didn’t do any of the legwork. The movies and things that came to the city came to our school looking for us.

When I came here, I was learning from from scratch and not really having that background of having managers, or an agent or any of that stuff. I really had to do a lot of legwork of doing the research, finding the legitimate websites, finding out how to do the headshots right, and doing casting director workshops and finding the right acting class. There’s a lot that goes into before you even book a job; all the stuff that you don’t necessarily love all the time, but all the nuts and bolts that go into making you what you want to be.

I didn’t move to LA to just piss around and be a waiter or go work at the mall. I’d rather spend my time finding the work. Even the Damon Wayans job, I found that on my own which people found really strange. But you just have to have that mentality. I was online from morning until night nonstop. If an audition came, I literally got it within the minute it was posted because I was just so dedicated to it.

That focus and dedication, I consider myself a hustla. Hustla mentality!

Gabrielle Dennis: The Underground With Damon Wayans

I had already had a love for the Wayans family. I think they’re this national icon, this poster child for family of comedians and comics.

And to be able to work with Damon, he’s hilarious and he’s fun. But he’s so dedicated and focused too, so it was kind of interesting to see that side of him. And he’s very family oriented – a couple of his family members worked in different aspects of the show.

He really embraced us and protected us and looked out for us. And he allowed us to just have all kinds of freedom to create and I think what was really fun. There was a lot of really, really great stuff.

Gabrielle Dennis: Smoking Six Flags Summer

I used to perform at Six Flags. I did one summer there while I was in college. We did this Top 40s review. It was like Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, and I had a lot of the great lead female music songs. I had a wig and we were decked out in these futuristic clothes. And there was a scene where I kind of have to walk past the side of the stage where all these lights are and I do this head flip.

Of course, this one day I decided to not secure my wig down. So I do this head flip and this dance move and my wig flies off of my head over to the side and lands right on one of the lights. And it starts smoking. I look at the sound board and they had to cut to our track because I can’t not laugh right now; completely unprofessional, but whatever. The audience was filling in. We made fun of it, the whole situation. I’m literally on stage half dressed because I have my hair that’s pinned down and then this obnoxious wig that’s singeing on the side.

It’s really straight out of a sitcom, the characters and types of people there, but that was honestly the best job I think I’ve ever had. We had so much fun. It was always straight comedy.

Gabrielle Dennis: Blue Mountain State

I play a footballer’s girlfriend. I did that on The Game. But unlike The Game, it’s definitely a lot more adult-oriented. It’s definitely more of a risqué type of show. Kids – don’t watch.

But it’s fun. It’s very out there comedy. If the network gives you the opportunity, they’re going to take it and that’s what they’ve been doing. It’s a very targeted audience, and I feel like it’s so over the top with some of the scenarios that you’ve never seen before, which makes them funny.

Denise, the character I play, is very overbearing and super controlling of the star running back. She’s one of those girls who’s got her life mapped out. In the pilot episode, she’s hanging up a time-line. It’s like, “Okay. And year four, we’re going to be doing this. We’re getting married on this date. These are the colors we’re wearing. You’re going to win your Heisman, and you have to win that prior to us getting married.” She’s very goal-oriented. If things aren’t going according to plan, she’ll make them happen by any means necessary.

In college, I didn’t experience any of this stuff. But of course, I wasn’t into sports and I didn’t know that side of it. And plus, my college team wasn’t that great. Let’s be honest. Maybe if you’re a powerhouse kind of team, you kind of get away with a little more things than average.
