Erin Cummings: From Shakespeare To Playboy

I studied Shakespeare at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and my very first Shakespearean role was Lady Macbeth. It was my first professional role. Like I got my equity card and I went, “Are you sure you don’t want me to play like one of the witches or a nurse or something?” They were like, “No, you’re Lady Macbeth.” I was like, “Oh f*ck.”

I have to acknowledge and I would be foolish not to acknowledge the image that people see when I walk in the room. I’m not a character actress. I’m just not. One of these days I’ll be somebody’s grandma, but right now I am a youngish, attractive woman, and of the roles that I play have a certain level of sexuality. I am very happy about the fact that all of the roles that I play, even though they’re very sexy, they always have a certain level of intelligence,

Playboy had offered me a pictorial and I turned it down, but I said I would love to be in your magazine. I think they have great circulation obviously and it’s not every day that Playboy let’s you be in their magazine with your clothes on. So I said I would gladly take that, thank you. I understand what my product is and right now my product looks pretty good.

Erin Cummings: Texas Rangerette

The Kilgore College Rangerettes were started in 1940 by Miss Gussie Nell Davis. The president of the college at the time wanted to create something during half-time that would keep people from going under the stands and drinking. So during a football game in 1940, at half-time the lights in the stadium dropped down and 49 girls in white cowboy hats, red shirts, white leather belts, blue skirts and white cowboy boots with white gauntlets, went out on the field and lined up. Then all of a sudden the lights came on and fireworks flashed. Before they even moved a muscle, the audience jumped to their feet and started applauding. And they did what they would consider in our day a very modest little kick routine.

When I was a Rangerette, we did a tour of Singapore, we did Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, we performed at the President’s Inauguration Gala. They are the epitome of what you think of when you imagine the iconic all American girl or the Texas girl with the cowboy boots. The only thing that has changed about the uniform since 1940 is the length of the skirt, which is now just under your business.

When we were filming Bitch Slap there were some really difficult days with lots of wind and sand. But I would think back to those days when I had a pulled hamstring and was having to do the high kick routine at the Cotton Bowl, and there was ice on the field, and I was just trying to make sure that I got through the routine and didn’t slip and fall. I was in more pain than I could imagine but I kept a smile on my face the whole time because I was a Rangerette and that meant that I had to have pride in what I did and it didn’t matter how much pain I was in.

For the rest of my life there is no one that can take that away from me. People may say, “Oh yeah, Erin Cummings, she’s a has-been. She did that movie Bitch Slap and Spartacus and then nothing else.” But I will always be a Rangerette.

Erin Cummings: Painful Memory

When I was younger, I was one of those kids that had really bad acne. I never had attention from boys, I never had a boyfriend. I remember I was at a party once and there was this boy that I had a huge crush on, and we were sitting out in the garage together drinking a beer and he said, “I got to ask you a question.” And I thought he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend, or he was going to ask me to kiss him or something and he said… “I just have to ask you, do you ever wash your face?”

It was so mortifying because what do you possibly say to that? I went from feeling like such a beautiful girl about to have this boy that she had a crush on kiss her, to all of a sudden wanting to crawl down into the drain.

You don’t realize how saying something to someone can have such a devastating effect on them. I remember my mom would always tell me about all the famous actresses that had acne problems. “I read in such and such magazine that so and so has really bad skin” and it would make me feel good. I was like, “I want to grow up and I want to be beautiful and I want to tell people that I used to have really bad acne so maybe there will be some 13 year old girl who like feels like sh*t because she can’t get a boyfriend because she has too many pimples and she’ll feel better about herself.”

Erin Cummings: Don’t Mess With Me

There are three things that I care about in this world. One of them is my family. The second is my career, and the third is my health, in that order. If you choose to f*ck with any of those things, be prepared because I am not a bitch you want to f*ck with. One of the things I’ve learned about myself if that I have learned how to control my temper. I’ve never had anger issues or anything like that, but I am a very emotional person, which is a valuable asset as an actress because I’ve found a medium which allows me to channel all that emotion.

At the same time, that doesn’t mean that I just don’t have these feelings anymore that come up at certain situations. I am someone that will forgive, but I will never forget. If you are someone who deliberately takes steps to harm my family, my career or my health, not only will I never let you get away with it, I will make you pay for it. The difference is that you won’t know you’re paying for it.

There is someone right now who is deliberately f***ing with me and that person will be paying for it for a very long time. And unfortunately for that person will never know that it’s come from me.

Erin Cummings: Bitch Slap

When I read the title of Bitch Slap, I was like, “This is bullsh*t”. I was offended. I was like, “Really? Is this what my career has come to?” It was kind of… disappointing. But I hadn’t been working at all, so I read a scene, and I just went, “Oh, I get it. These people are actually really funny.” I understand the joke and the tongue in cheek humor of it.

I play the brains behind the operation, Hel. She’s the brains behind the operation and the mastermind. What’s really exciting about Hel is that she starts out one way – very cold, emotionless, methodical and only concerned about business. As the film progresses, we learn more and more about her and find out she’s not at all what she seems to be, which allows me to go on a really interesting journey as an actress.

Erin Cummings: Spartacus

Spartacus is obviously the story of the slave who became a gladiator who then lead a slave revolt. And people have asked me, “Is it based on the movie?” Well no, it’s an actual real story in history. And they’re like, “But it was a movie.” I’m like, “But the movie was based on history, a real story.”

Because Spartacus was a slave there just wasn’t that much documented material on his real life so there is a certain degree of creative license. For example, I play Spartacus’ wife, Sura. We are assuming that Spartacus had a life before he was a slave and that is where he meets Sura, and she is the motivation behind Spartacus’ every move.

In episode one, Sura is kidnapped and taken from him and he spends the whole of the season basically trying to get her back. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for me because it gave me the chance to play the leading lady, the love interest in a period piece, with an accent, doing fight scenes. Having done Spartacus, it kind of balances things out because people go, “Oh, she’s a really serious dramatic actress, but she’s got a cool sense of humor enough to go do a movie like Bitch Slap.”
