DJ Diamond Kuts: Mixtape- “Her Story In The Making”

Right now I’m working on a new mixtape. It’s called “Her Story In The Making.” You got different types of mi tapes. The mixtape that I’m putting together, people usually just call that a compilation album. You just get a whole bunch of artists that jump on a track that you put it together on a CD. It’s like you have an album with a whole bunch of different artists on there, different songs. That would be the best description I can give you on what I’m working on as far as when I say compilation album.

When we talk about street mixtapes,they’re just songs that are already out and songs that people want to hear, that people want. For instance, there’s a lot of songs that you hear on the radio that you want, but you really can’t get it because you really don’t know where to get it from. A lot of people use street mix apes as an outlet for people, for artists and for people, that want to get a record that they can’t necessarily get their hands on. So that’s the difference.

A compilation album like the one I’m talking about would be like a movie soundtrack. A street mixtape is songs that’s already out, and people just put in a whole bunch of songs that they like together in a playlist or putting it on a CD for people to enjoy.

DJ Diamond Kuts: Master DJ

My dad bought me the starter DJ kit, and I tried it out for a little while. I loved it. I worked at a record store, and I saved up all my money to buy Technics. Technics are a better brand of turntable than I had. I had belt drive turntables – they’re not really good ones. So I saved up for Technics.

I started hanging out at the local record store. After school, I would take the bus downtown and I would go through records and ask people that worked there about particular artists, really getting to know the history and the background of music.

One of the employees, his name was Fat Cat and he was a DJ. He took me under his wing. He said, “You know what? I want to teach you how to blend and we’d start there. Come to my house once a week.” And I would go to his house, and he would teach me how to blend.

And that’s how I really got into it; just hanging out with a lot of the local DJs. They used to DJ in the park out here in Philadelphia, so I would go to the park and DJ with them and DJ at the store. That’s how I really got my start, really DJing and learning the basics of it.

When I got into radio, I started learning from a DJ named Cosmic Cat. I beat match. I scratch, I blend. I do everything.

Philly feels like home, you know what I mean? And the people here, the Philly crowd is a hard crowd to please. That’s why I love Philly, because I always say, you can make it at Philly, you can make it pretty much everywhere. Because they’re so hard.

Philly has a lot of culture here, and people like to have fun. And it’s not too busy and it’s not too country at the same time.

You got a big hip-hop scene in Philly. It’s a real big music market, really, period. Because even a lot of the artists that we see on tour and stuff like that, a lot of their band players are from Philly. Philly is really into the music. We’ve got a big market for all genres; Hip-hop, pop, rap, R&B. It doesn’t matter.

DJ Diamond Kuts: Legendary Father

A moment that happened to me in college was my dad passing away. My dad was really into a lot of music. Growing up, we were always around music and we knew so much about it that when he passed away, I was DJing at the time. My dad bought me my first set of turntables.

After he passed, I said, “You know what? I know my dad would want me to really go extra hard with doing this DJ thing.” And that’s what really motivated me in sculpting me into becoming the DJ I am today.

My father was part of a local rap group in Philadelphia called Grandmasters of Funk. He worked with Jazzy Jeff. He also worked with another DJ out here called Cosmic Kev. He was one of the bigger rappers out here in Philly on the local scene.

Growing up, we were always listening and watching videotapes of his old performances. We heard all kinds of music and different DJs.

When I was in high school, I was into a lot of other instruments before I got into DJing. I played the flute for years and played around with the drums for a little bit. Then, DJing was the next thing I wanted to get into. My dad influenced us to do all of the music that we did.

DJ Diamond Kuts: Advice for DJs

I’m lucky that I had great teachers. But for people that are starting, the best thing to do is to know your background, know the background of music, learn the techniques of DJing.

A lot of people say they want to DJ, but they really don’t know the techniques. They don’t know how to make records go together. You’ve got to learn how to rock a party and keep the interest of a crowd.

I would say keep the interest of a crowd, that’s one; knowing the history of the music and learning the techniques would be two and three. Those are probably the top three things to learn.

The show is a hip-hop show and comes on BET. The show actually airs at 3:00 AM. So we encourage everybody to really DVR the show. It’s a hip-hop show. We play videos, we talk about the latest gossip. Everything hip-hop.

I got the show because before The Deal, it was a show called Rap City. Rap City used to have guest DJs come onto the show. I would be a guest DJ once in a blue moon and then it became a constant thing. I was going up there one week here, then the next week and then four days at a time, five days at a time.

Just going there so many times and really knowing the staff and they loved me. When they came to them about doing a new show, I was their first pick.

“There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve done, but there’s so much more that I can do.” says DJ Diamond Kuts, and we most certainly agree. No, that’s not her birth name (it’s Tina Durham), but it might as well have been, as DJ’ing has been Diamond’s destiny from day one. The daughter of hip-hop artist Grand Tone of the Grandmasters of Funk, Dad bought Diamond her first DJ kit for Christmas. After learning her chops from local masters, she made her own mix tapes, and landed a job at Philly’s Power 99 FM where she’s been tearing it up ever since. Her latest gig is as co-host of BET’s The Deal, a hip-hop show that features hot videos and top talent. Not content with the label of “female DJ”, Diamond mixes and blends with such skill and dexterity that she recently became the official DJ for the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team.
