Alex Young: So You Want To Be Musician?

ON SONGWRITING: Whenever I’m really feeling inspired, I think it’s important to stop and just think about what exactly is going on in your brain, and write whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I’ll just do the chorus first and I’ll create the song around that. A lot of times I’ll have a train of thinking and I’ll do the verses and I’ll create a chorus around what I’ve already been thinking of. It’s really just dependent on whatever your mood is, at least for me. That’s how I’ve sort of been doing it, and it’s really important also that I have the music in my head before I write anything, because sometimes words will come out and then it’s really hard to set it to music. So the music is the number one starting point for me.

ADVICE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS: I would say just keep determined and just never stop. Always practice. I think that’s such an important part of it – that as long as your technique is up,you can go so many different places with it and change your style and the way you do it.

Alex Young: Fashion Tips From A Lip Gloss Lover

I’ve always had a huge obsession with lip glosses. I don’t really know what it is but I have at least 10 of them on me at any given time, which is sort of weird. I just love all the different flavors and colors. It’s sort of girly and just very up my alley. I’m very into fashion and design and color is a big part of that. So any color that really appeals to me, I just have to get it. I just love lip glosses. I can’t explain it.

I’m in love with the Laura Mercier Lip Balm. It’s extremely moisturizing and it’s so important for the winter. That’s definitely one of my biggest beauty secrets. I combine that with a shade of the Lorac Lipstick, it’s called It Girl and those together just create this really natural sort of glow. I love the sort of sun-kissed look in makeup.

For fashion I always like to do things that match up to my mood. So if I’m feeling edgy and funky, I’ll do something with that. Or I can mix it with girly. I love juxtapositions of things, so I’ll do edgy a lot of the times with really elegant or sophisticated, and I’ll just mix them up.

Alex Young: Heart Of America

Heart of America I actually did right after September 11^th. My dad was in the Towers when it happened but thankfully he got out. I really wanted to make a song. It’s sort of a collection of three different songs put together, and they’re all patriotic songs. I really wanted to do something to help out the firefighters and the EMS down there, so all of the profits we made went straight to them. I got played on Z-100 on the date consecutively, so that was really cool that my efforts made a difference and it helped people in a way. I got a lot of callers calling in and saying how moved they were by the song and it was just really a great experience, something positive that sort of came out of such a tragedy.

It was first song of mine to be played on the radio. I was actually in school and somebody told me so I ran to the office and I was listening to it. I called in because they wanted me to call in and I talked to them on the radio and they played it a couple more times. It was just an amazing feeling because so much energy and effort goes into recording a song. It’s a huge process and so when you actually hear it being shared – it’s just an incredible feeling. It really can’t be recreated.

Alex Young: Big-Time Bossa Nova Fan

I love listening to Bossa Nova. That’s a big musical influence for me and I listen to everything from Astrud to Joao to Bebel Gilberto to Antonio Carlos Jobim, and it always takes me back to Cape Cod in the summers when I was younger vacationing there. It’s just very relaxing. When it’s high stress and I’m running around the city going to shows or rehearsing, I love to at some point just plug in my Ipod and sort of just relax, and it takes me back to that place.

Sometimes it takes me to this beach in Brazil. I’ve never been to Brazil, but for some reason it takes me there. Possibly because they are singing in Portuguese!

I love going back to the classics because I feel like through that you can bring your own kind of swagger to the things you’re doing now. So I love listening to Jobim and Astrud and that sort of Bossa Nova sort of style.

Alex Young: Sesame Street Kid

I started out with Sesame Street. I was about six or so. I did a couple seasons as Keisha and I got to meet all of the awesome puppets and Snuffleupagus and Elmo and Big Bird and I saw behind the set. For a little girl that was just amazing because I used to watch it all the time. It was one of my favorite shows and I got to meet the people behind it.

It’s funny, as a little kid it could be really frightening to see a huge monster that you’re working with if you don’t know it’s not a monster. So the puppeteers come up to you and they point out the puppet and they say, “That’s snuffleupagus over there. I’m me, my name is Bob. I’m going to get into that outfit, that costume, so don’t be scared. Don’t be frightened. It’s going to be me.” So you watch him get into it, and he’s talking to you all through the way so you’re not terrified. Once he’s in it there are actually two people inside that costume, and he sort of looks at you – it makes so much sense because as a little girl or a 6 year old, you see a huge monster man coming over to you, and you run out and you’re nowhere to be found, you’re traumatized. I thought that was really cool tactic to make the children at ease.

Amazing is a collection of songs – and a lot of them are upbeat, very spirited and uplifting. I love to listen to the album when I’m walking across the park on a sunny day. I like listening to it- it takes you on a ride.

Cold was so much fun to shoot. I shot it down in Miami in a Spanish monastery. They actually took the whole monastery from Spain and placed it brick by brick back in Miami in the right order, so you’re actually in a Spanish monastery. We did that because we wanted to have that exotic feel without actually going out of the country. And it was really great. They had smoke machines, all the dancers were there with me and it was just really energetic and just really positive energy the whole time. Seeing it play back after you’ve worked so hard on it for a few days is just amazing. It was so much fun.

Heart Stop we filmed in New York City and it was great. One of my friends was in it with me and he’s such a funny guy – we were in the ambulance. Cicely and Olisa of Nustyles choreographed the video and they are just amazing girls. They did Missy Elliott’s tour for six years and danced with her.
