Shira Lazar: So You Wanna Be An Internet Journalist?
I’d say find that subject that you just love talking about, that you’re curious about. That thing that all your friends say, “You know way too much about it.” And that’s the thing, that’s the first thing you should move towards and just start a blog, create a platform that you can just express those thoughts and share ideas with people.
Start the blog, add maybe a video component to it, get your iPhone video going or your flip cam, if you like video. If that’s the way you care to share. Stop thinking and just do it and you’ll learn as you go what you feel comfortable doing. What you don’t feel comfortable in will become a part of your routine. Sometimes you need to be disciplined to force yourself when you start doing stuff like that, but that becomes, instead of you waiting for someone to hire you to create your portfolio, that becomes your portfolio.
Go out and about and meet the community. Don’t expect that people are necessarily going to find you, but meeting face to face with people goes a long way.
