Shantel VanSanten: Catholic School Girl
I went to an all girl Catholic school and there was maybe between 200 and 250 girls in my whole school. So my high school experience was different than anybody else’s. I feel like I got to focus more on who I was and really what I wanted to do without the influence of boys around, and I was like president of glee club. And it wasn’t like a dorky thing to do. It was like really admirable. And I was president of art club. I ran the yearbook for two years. I felt like any avenue that I wanted to explore, I was free to explore and if I failed at it, it was okay and it wasn’t like you know, there was 700 students in my grade and everybody was looking down upon me or judging me.
The 34 girls who graduated in my class all brought something different to the table. And nobody worried about what you were wearing or what was going on outside. It was like when you came to school you really educated yourself and involved yourself in activities and tried to find out who you were.
When I say this, it’s very true. I was always really socially awkward. And more introverted, so I would always like tag along and hang out, but for all of our dances up until my senior prom, I either had blind dates or I just went with my girlfriends, or I didn’t go because I had never really dated in high school up until my senior year.
It’s so funny because it’s like really cliché. Everybody’s like, “I was really awkward and kind of fugly”, but I really mean it because I’ve shown the guys who are on the television show with me right now, I have like albums, photo albums my mom just gave me for my birthday. I have like childhood pictures and they’re really like, “Oh my God, you were not attractive at all.”
