Scottie Thompson: Holidays in Cambodia

My favorite vacation spot is Cambodia. I’ve been there twice and I’m obsessed with Angkor Wat and the temples there. That’s where they filmed Laura Croft: Tomb Raider. I actually became obsessed with it at the end of In the Mood for Love, my favorite film. The character goes to whisper a secret into the wood and into the Earth, and I kind of became obsessed with the idea of doing that.
This time I went to a smaller town outside of Siem Reap that’s not like they describe Siem Reap as the “Disneyland of Cambodia”, which in a lot of ways it is. A lot of tourists just go to the temples and leave. But I tend to spend a little more time there, and I just like the pace of life. I think that the culture and the people have been through an incredibly painful history, and there seems to be a real hope there and a determination to move beyond that, even though it’s still very fresh in people’s minds.
South Africa would be my other obsession. I wrote my thesis on South Africa, and there’s so much to see in that country in terms of diversity of cultures and of nature. and a similar difficult history that is pretty recent in people’s minds. I’d like to go back there.
