Scottie Thompson: Big-Time Murakami Fan
I’ve read like seven of his novels and I’ve never found an author that I just wanted to keep reading and reading and reading. I couldn’t suck it up enough. Kafka on the Shore – that’s my favorite book right now. I like the fact that it incorporates mythological and magical elements, but in a real life situations. Murakami integrates these rather absurd facts into what could be construed as a normal narrative. All of a sudden you’ve got a cat that talks, but other things are pretty normal.
Norwegian Wood is the best love story ever. And I really like The Elephant Vanishes, the collection of shorts, because I like encountering moments in my day to day that remind me of this whole world he’s opened up and these possibilities.
But in general I prefer novels. I love the Harry Potter books, and I’m currently reading The Hobbit. I love reading and escaping in that respect, and Murakami allows you to escape, but in a slightly more strange and realistic way.
