Jenn Brown: On The Wild Side, With Sharks

shark

So the show, “The Wild Side” which is the first show that I got my start hosting was about traveling to countries around the world. So I started setting up these really cool, extreme activities that I could do in that location.

So in Brazil I went hang gliding onto the beach and learned Capoeira and you know, and then in Alaska I para-glided off of a mountain and then I went in with wild moose and bears and I fed them. And I’m totally an adrenaline junky and there’s probably nothing that you could ask me to do that I won’t do.

I was on a show, in the Bahamas and they said, “We’re going to do a shark feeding.” And I said okay, I’d love to because I’m a big scuba diver, I’ve done shark diving before. Anyway, so we get there.  This is where they shoot Open Water and Into The Blue and all those shark movies. They shoot them all here because this company has trained these sharks. They’re like Pavlov’s dog, every time they show up with a boat, they do it like 365 days a year – they are either doing a feeding off the back of the boat or a feeding under the water.  So these sharks know as soon as they hear the motor they show up. So when we pull up with our boat, and – I thought: I didn’t have chain mail on.

They didn’t give me chain mail and I still didn’t know why. Everyone else got chain mail. When we pull up there’s another boat doing a feeding off the back of the boat. So the sharks are over there. It’s about 200 yards away and there’s people on the boat and they’re throwing meat off the boat. And the sharks are thrashing around in the water and eating. And nobody’s in the water.

Well then that boat leaves and all the sharks now show up at our boat. So they’re thrashing around all on the top of the water where I’m supposed to drop in. And the only thing the woman said was, “When you go down, whatever you do, you’ve got to keep your arms into your body. You’ve got to be completely controlled.”

So that was my scariest moment because I’m on the top of the boat and she’s like, “Okay, we’re going to jump in.” I’m like, “You want me to jump in?” There are literally, okay thousands is way exaggerating, there was easily 40 sharks, all on the surface, thrashing around, making movements because they’re fighting, they think we’re going to throw them food. There was like a deck off the back of the boat and she just wants me to step in the water. And I was like, “You are crazy.” And then all of a sudden a shark grabs the metal ladder right next to where I’m going to go in and bites it and lets it go. I’m like, “No way.” She’s like, “They’re not going to bite you. They don’t want you. They know that we’ve got the food. You’re not the food.”

I’m like, “It just bit the metal railing.” You know? “I’m sure I taste a little bit better than that. Are they going to test it out just to see if I’m the food?” So that was scary, and of course, I drop in and the sharks are everywhere. And it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. Sharks everywhere and the guy was feeding them. They were bumping into you, because they’re kind of like big Dobermans that don’t know how big they are. They’re moving around, they’re bumping into you because it’s like the Doberman that chases the little dog around the living room and like knocks chairs over because it thinks it’s as tiny.
