America Olivo: Confession

I was a total band geek. At 12 I transferred from a large school in Los Angeles of about 2500 students to a small school of 200 kids in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. I was two years younger than everyone in my grade because I skipped grades, so I was twelve and a freshmen in high school. I was a total band geek, not that there’s anything wrong with being in band, I loved it. I made a friend my first day who was also from a bigger city.
So the whole day went by fabulously, but at the end of the day, my new friend and I were at the lockers and some cheerleaders came up and threw tuna fish sandwiches in our faces. And the cheerleader, I don’t even remember her name now, said to us, right after the flying fish, “That’s for thinking that you’re better than us.” And it hit me: at twelve, she really thinks I am better than her, and that’s why she’s angry, and she doesn’t think I’m a dork! This is going to work out
fabulously! The next day I walked into school empowered.
