I’m inspired… When I wake up and take a deep breath, and I think life inspires me. Life is really inspiring. To be alive, to be breathing, to watch a really amazing performance is very inspiring, to see beautiful film and to see things that, I don’t know, different things that travel – all of it. I think life is inspiring.

Success is… waking up and being happy every morning, whatever, even if I end up working at McDonalds; as long as I’ve got a smile.

Never trust a man who… has a soul patch.

Stella Maeve: Try Everything Once

I think that helping the Earth is a big, big thing. I recycle. When I go grocery shopping, I bring my burlap sack, my burlap bags. In L.A., you see it a lot more than New York, but I definitely see more and more people doing it, making a difference and every little bit helps. Don’t use plastic bags. If you can afford it, buy a Prius. Whatever you can do to help. Ride a bike.

Try new and different things that you wouldn’t normally do and go check it out. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to do it again, but just something different. Mix it up. Always look for something new to try. Venice Beach has a drum circle every Saturday. I like to go do that. I bring my hand drum and I play. I just think it’s important to listen to music and fill your mind with other things. I really like to paint. I just bought some charcoals too to try to do some charcoal artwork on a canvas.

I try everything once and if I don’t like it, I won’t do it again. Same with food – my dad was a chef and he always taught me try everything once, and if you don’t like it, don’t eat it again. Snake was the craziest thing I’ve tried. It tastes like chicken.

Stella Maeve: Dating Philosophy

I think the best thing to do is to surround yourself with positive people; people that have a good energy and want to live life and smile. When you spend so much time around people that aren’t lifting you up or making you feel like these things are possible, it’s a waste of everyone’s time. It’s not a good feeling. Surround yourself with people that you have fun with, you can go on adventures with, you can hang out with. Not just go out to a nightclub, but go to the beach. Go on a hike in Malibu.

The nights that I don’t want to go out and I end up going somewhere cool, I end up meeting the coolest person in the world. I think it happens when you least expect it. I think meeting somebody you like will happen when you’re totally not looking for it. I think when you’re focused on yourself and your career is when the most amazing person comes along.

Deal breakers? A guy that takes longer to get ready than me. I think someone that’s very vain and takes life too seriously is a deal breaker for me. I think you need to just have fun with it. It’s all about the ride. My mom always says, “It’s not about getting there; it’s about how you get there.”

Also, I would never date another actor. I’ve tried it. It never ends up well. But dating a producer, or a photographer, or DP, that’s cool, because they get the industry, but they’re not competing with you.

Stella Maeve: Gossip Girl and Leighton Meester

That role was so much fun to do because it’s totally not me at all; the complete polar opposite of me now and me at 14. I did actually live on the Upper West Side for a little while, but it isn’t what it used to be. It’s very different now. Nobody wants to live on the Upper East Side anymore. Everybody is all about Soho and the East Village and the West Village.

That was great because I’ve known Leighton Meester since I was 15. We did a movie together, so it was like hanging out with family. I was like, “I’m coming!” She was like, “Ahhh!” And we ended up reconnecting and getting along amazingly. She helped me fit right in and spent a lot of time with her. We still talk to this day. She’s wonderful – one of my homies.

I’m so proud of her. She’s following her dreams. She’s always wanted to make music and now she’s doing it, she’s singing. It wasn’t easy. She was performing at American Apparel and all this stuff, and now she’s really doing it. I heard her song on the radio and I called her and was like “Congratulations.” She’s been amazing. She’s been more than generous with me and she’s totally helped me out with a lot of situations.

Stella Maeve: Kristen and Dakota

I had no idea what to expect of Kristen. I had seen her work. And Dakota’s as well. I wasn’t nervous or anything, just almost like, “I really have to step up my game because I’m working with these amazing actresses and I don’t want to be the weakest link.”

Kristen and Dakota and I became really close very quick. We hit it off right away. We all just spent a lot of time together on and off set. They brought me in like family. Everybody was so close. They were all just wonderful, wonderful people, totally willing to share the spotlight with everybody. We hung out as if we were best friends. They are still really good friends of mine. I love them dearly. It’s really nice to have a personal relationship with people you work with.

Dakota was great. I joked that “She’s more mature than me,” because I feel like a baby sometimes. Dakota doesn’t seem 15. She’s got her head on so straight and she’s so cool. It felt like we all molded into the same age we got along so well.

All the girls in the movie actually play – Dakota really sings. We all play the real instruments. Nobody was faking. We had rehearsals three times a week to play the music. We were family. We all played music together. We were a band.

Stella Maeve: Studying Sandy

Sandy West – she’s the only one that’s not around with us anymore. I talked with all of her friends and family. I studied the videos. I spoke on the phone with her sister and her mother, and read up on her. I wanted to live my life the way that she did and try to get it down perfectly because it’s really important, especially since she’s no longer here. It’s extremely hard.

Joan and Cherie were on set to help guide the girls to show them who they were. Even though it’s years and years later, obviously, they’re not who they were when they were 15. They helped me with a lot of my questions, and answers, and whatnot. It helped a lot to have them around. Joan and Cherie could tell me old stories about Sandy. I still spend a lot of time with Sandy’s best friend. I’m actually taking her as my date to the premiere.

Sandy was kind of like the base of the band. Not only was she the drummer, she was the one that held everyone together. Her dream was this band. She and Joan were the first two founders of it, the ones that started it. All she wanted to do was play drums, and make music, and have a good time. She was the one who every time people would get into a fight, she calmed everybody down. She was like, “Everybody, let’s just be together. We’re all friends. We’re family. This is our dream. Let’s do this.” She was the voice of reason.

Stella Maeve: Hell’s Kitchen Native

Hell’s Kitchen is my hometown. I was born at Lenox Hill Hospital.

I loved acting ever since I was four years old. I’m named after Stella Adler who was a famous acting teacher. My mom was a theatre actress. My dad – he’s an amazing dancer, chef, and musician. He plays the drums – that’s where I learned them from. I think both of them are just very eccentric and amazing artists. I’m like the perfect mixture of both of them. I just love to perform. I love to make people feel things.

I started taking classes when I was six. At first, everybody was not very supportive. Mom and Dad were always like, “What about being a lawyer?” They didn’t really have a choice. I had booked a movie at 16. It was at the end of tenth grade and it was either stay in school or do the movie. And I was just like, “Well, I’m going to go do this movie.” And I did the movie and I missed a month and a half of school. When I came back, it was like finals time and I had no idea. I was totally not caught up on any of it. I couldn’t do anything else. I was like, “I’m done. I’m out.”

I left home and went back to the city. Everybody in New York pretty much moved out of their house young. And even if they were still living at home at 16, most parents have a job, and there’s a nanny and all the kids are really doing their own things. I moved back to Hell’s Kitchen. I lived with a boyfriend at the time. We got a studio apartment and shared it. I was just auditioning and waitressing and bartending on the side to pay rent.

I came out here a little bit over a year and a half ago. I like my life out here. I like to work in the sunshine. I wake up every day to beautiful light. It’s nice because you get the time here. I feel like in New York, it’s just never-ending. You’re always on the hustle. But here, if I want to take a canvas and go to the beach and paint, I can do that on an afternoon. If I want to, I can go to the gym every day. I find time in the day to get things done.

Stella Maeve: The Runaways

I did know who they were. My dad played the drums in the 80s, so I was around a lot of music. My mom’s a big music fan too. I wasn’t that familiar with the group – that’s why I wasn’t a fan. But I definitely knew who they were. They changed rock and roll history. Think about it – the 1970s, 15 year old girls in an all rock band. Nobody would’ve ever thought. They went worldwide. It wasn’t just like some little LA band. This was a big, big deal. As I prepared for the role, I got to know them really well and I became a huge fan.

I got the role through my manager and agents just like any other audition. I went in and read for it. At first, they didn’t even want to see me. They were like, “We don’t know who she is. We’ve never heard of her. We’re not interested.” And my mangers were like, “No, you have to see her. She’s perfect; she surfs, she plays the drums, she looks just like her. You’ve got to get her in the room.”

They got me in the room. I auditioned and I got a call back. After the callback, all these girls started sending in tapes, so I taped myself playing the drums. I hadn’t played in a bit because I’ve been living from apartment to apartment. It’s hard to play drums when you’re in an apartment. So I was going to studio spaces and practicing there. I sent them in the tape, and I guess they really responded well to it. I beat out 500 girls.

But I must’ve gone back to that audition four times. Every role I’ve ever gotten, I really had to fight hard for.
