When I was younger, I was one of those kids that had really bad acne. I never had attention from boys, I never had a boyfriend. I remember I was at a party once and there was this boy that I had a huge crush on, and we were sitting out in the garage together drinking a beer and he said, “I got to ask you a question.”  And I thought he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend, or he was going to ask me to kiss him or something and he said… “I just have to ask you, do you ever wash your face?”

It was so mortifying because what do you possibly say to that? I went from feeling like such a beautiful girl about to have this boy that she had a crush on kiss her, to all of a sudden wanting to crawl down into the drain.

You don’t realize how saying something to someone can have such a devastating effect on them. I remember my mom would always tell me about all the famous actresses that had acne problems. “I read in such and such magazine that so and so has really bad skin” and it would make me feel good. I was like, “I want to grow up and I want to be beautiful and I want to tell people that I used to have really bad acne so maybe there will be some 13 year old girl who like feels like sh*t because she can’t get a boyfriend because she has too many pimples and she’ll feel better about herself.”
