Celeste Thorson: Mexican Art School
My mother had gone to a classical art school called Insituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende. My grandmother had gone there too, so it was kind of like a rite of passage. My mother took me down there, but I ended up living on my own and having roommates and having my own lifestyle. In Mexico, once you’re 16, you’re basically an adult. It’s like being 18 here. I was living my own life and working full-time, and going to school and doing everything down there.
I did learn to sculpt, and do some silver working, and jewelry, and bronze casting and wax work. It was just amazing to be in that kind of creative atmosphere. I think it was a really great, formative part of my life. My mother is a professional artist, my grandmother is a professional artist, and living up to that was really tough when you’re comparing yourself to their work. I was like, “Wow. Maybe performing arts is more my thing.” But bronze casting was really fun, and also silver working. I liked working with metal and chemicals.
