Celeste Thorson: Avant-Garde Model
I had dabbled a little bit when I was in Mexico with some of my friends. When I came to California, a lot of my friends were makeup artists and stylists. Just living in LA, everyone’s kind of in the industry. They had asked if I’d do them a favor and just shoot with them.
I just had a blast. It was like playing dress-up. It wasn’t work. It was just a good time and really creative. It was a new medium. It was makeup and the imagery. For me, I always was drawn towards more classical lines, composition. But then I got to work with some really crazy artists that just did very avant-garde kind of stuff and I just fell in love with it. I thought it was amazing to be able to create art with people as well as on paper.
I’m still traumatized by doing this bikini shoot up in San Francisco when it was freezing cold outside by the Golden Gate. I was just shivering, and shaking and there was wind drifting through my hair. I had goose bumps. They’re like, “Be sexy, be sexy.” I’m like, “That is humanly impossible right now.” Oh, my God – it was awful. To this day, I can’t do cold shoots at all. I just won’t do them. I’ll pass.
But I’ve had some really amazing experiences. I just did this shoot last week at a helicopter hanger. I was being able to fly in the helicopter and get kind of woozy and sick. I do all these aerobatics and, work with guns and cars and all this fun stuff. It’s always exciting to see what the next shoot is going to bring and what kind of creative setups people can do. I did this one shoot where everything was covered in dripping tar. It was really bizarre.
