Celeste Thorson: Activist
I’ve always had a big mouth and I’ve always spoken my mind my entire life, which has gotten me into trouble on a number of occasions. When I was going to Catholic school, every time I would come up with some kind of logical question, it was very controversial and I never really got a straight answer. I was always active about and vocal about my opinions. And growing up in a family of lawyers and very argumentative people, I guess it kind of fueled my opinions.
When I was about 17, I started doing fundraising for Save the Children and Human Rights Campaign. I did that for a couple of years and realized that petitions and lobbying were amazing, but it was really the mobilization of people I enjoyed and talking face-to-face with people – just going to the promenade and handing out postcards that were petitions that they could send in and stuff like that.
I’m really concerned about human, environmental rights, equal rights, civil rights. I know it’s not glamorous, but you can make a big difference.
