Jen Lilley: Disaster Date Drama

You think working on an unscripted prank show is easy? Think again. “Soap acting is tremendously hard. On General Hospital we do 120 pages a day. My character has 35 to 40 pages a day and I think that’s hard, but I have to tell you, nothing prepared me better for everything else like Disaster Date did,” Jen admits.

Disaster Date, the MTV hidden camera show, gave Jen the opportunity to be as creative and silly as she wanted to. “The people you’re pulling these pranks on really don’t know they’re on a hidden camera show,” she explains. “Before every date the Producers would laugh at me because I would sit there and I would just start talking, start babbling at the table before they came in because I was trying to warm up. You’d get this fact sheet on them, and it’s a fact sheet that their best friend gives you, so you don’t even know how legitimate it is. He hates spaghetti so we’ll order spaghetti, he doesn’t like smokers, so I’ll smoke and we’ll go from there. Other than that you don’t really know. You have to go for it, so it was quite the adventure,” she recalls fondly.

“It was really funny because literally every single date I had after they found out I was an actress they’d be like ‘so you want to go out?’ she laughs. “My boyfriend thought it was hilarious because I’m somewhere in my 20’s and I was playing an 18 year old most of the time. So I mean I have siblings that are 16 and 20 and so he just thought it was hilarious.”

Jen Lilley: A Comedy Late Bloomer

Jen is a great comedian but it took a casting director to tell her she was funny for it to really sink in. “I was taking a workshop and a casting director said ‘you’re really funny’ and I was like, ‘what?’ because I’m one of four children and my siblings and parents are so hilarious that I swear to you I’m the kid at the table that five minutes later I get the joke and have a comeback,” she admits. “So I never thought I was funny because my family is so funny! I literally pale in comparison.”

A little bit of a late bloomer to comedy Jen began taking improv classes. “I started classes at Upright Citizen’s Brigade last year and I began booking little bit parts on comedies (Rules of Engagement, iCarly & Disaster Date) and I was like ‘I really like this,’” she confides. “I thought I was going to be a super dramatic actress, which I enjoy as well, but I really like the comedy now that I know I can do it.”

Jen Lilley: Cross Country to Cockroach

After booking her first independent film on a whim Jen decided to follow her acting dreams out to L.A. “I drove across the country, it was horrible,” she laughs. “I think all I packed up was a comforter, my Ikea bed frame, ‘cause I was a fool and decided to buy one even though there are Ikea’s in L.A., and all my kitchen items cause I love to bake and I was like I’ll be dammed if I leave my Kitchen Aid mixer back in Virginia.”

Everyone imagines Hollywood to be uber glamorous, but that’s simply not the case for a starving artist and Jen has the stories to prove it! “I lived in the worst section of Van Nuys… I got into this kind of apartment special where they baited and switched me and they put me in this unfinished studio,” she squeals, just remembering it. “Not only did I not have hot water and heat, but there were so many roaches and I am a total neat freak! I bleached my floors like three times a day. I was on the computer looking for jobs and bleaching the floors, and it was so bad that during the day you would see cockroaches and when you would take a shower they would come out of the drains! I was like ‘okay, if you make it through this then I’m good.’” She toughed it out and I’m happy to report majorly upgraded on the apartment front!

Jen Lilley: The Artist Speaks to Her

This awards season Hollywood is buzzing about The Artist, and Jen could not be prouder to be part of this amazing film. “I love the golden era, so when I saw the Breakdown I was like I have to be involved with that film if it’s the last thing I do!” she explains full of enthusiasm. “And at that time everybody thought that it was going to be at best an art house film that went nowhere… a silent film in 2011, that’s pretty risky.” Jen’s passion and her 1920’s face got her the audition she craved. “I’ve watched every silent movie that’s available on Netflix, I mean, I have Clara Bow’s biography. I can do this,” she told her agent.

“I got the audition and they said to come in character which was awesome because I worked on Changeling and I knew how to do my hair and what the makeup was like from that time period,” she confides. “I went in and did the scene twice and they loved it. I kept getting callbacks but the Director couldn’t fly in from France. They were like ‘we really, really like you, but your face is too young for the character of Norma (the role she originally auditioned for).’” Jen may not have gotten that role but they liked her so much, they actually wrote a part specifically for her! “I was so touched and excited,” she proudly admits.

“I cried!” Jen exclaims, about attending the movie’s premiere at the famous Grauman’s Theater in L.A. “I’d never seen a movie at Grauman’s so it was completely appropriate that my first one was a silent film that I was in and when the curtains first pulled up I was like ‘oh gosh, I love silent film and I love the script but I don’t know how the audience is going to take 90 minutes of silence,’ she confides. “And within the first minute, you’re in this movie as an audience. It’s fun and exciting and comical. I was trying to keep it together and I’m thinking there’s going to be reporters outside and my mascara will run, but I lost my marbles when they did the tap dance at the very end. I’d forgotten that was the ending and I’m crying and smiling and I leaned over to Heidi (the film’s casting director) and I said ‘thank you so much for casting me.’ It was beyond a dream come true.”
